Medieval Towns

Augsburg

Augsburg was founded in 15 BC by the Romans. It was shaped by the trade in salt and silver in Roman and medieval times. In about 120 AD Augsburg became the capital of the Roman province Raetia. Augsburg was sacked by the Huns in the 5th century AD, by Charlemagne in the 8th century, and by Welf of Bavaria in the 11th century, but arose each time to greater prosperity.

Burghausen  is a medieval town. Dominated is the city of Burghausen by Europe's longest fortress. The town was establihed in 889, during the reign of King Arnulf, the church being recognized by the influential bishopric of nearby Würzburg. The town was the site of a tariff house of the dukes of Ansbach and in thrall until 1397 to the duchy in the south, during the reign of King Wenceslaus. Regensburg

The Old Town of Regensburg bears an exceptional testimony to cultural traditions especially in the Holy Roman Empire, being the location for most of the assemblies of the Empire in the High Middle Ages. Regensburg also significantly contributed to more recent European history being the seat of the Perpetual Assembly from the 1663 to 1806. As a testimony to these functions, there are the remains of two imperial palatine palaces from the 9th century, and a large number of other well preserved historic buildings, which are testimony to the wealth and political importance of the community.

The Old Town of Regensburg is an outstanding example of a central-European medieval trading town, which has well preserved its historical stratigraphy, and which is an exceptional illustration to the development of commerce particularly from the 11th to 14th centuries.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

In around 970, the Eastern Franconian nobleman Reinger founded the Parish of Detwang in the Tauber Valley, just below the eventual site of the town of Rothenburg. The Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul was the parent church of the later town church of St. Jacob.

Around 1080, the Counts of Komburg built a fortress on the so-called "Vinegar Jug" (next to the Infirmary). In 1116 the family endowed its largesse on the Convent of Komburg (near Schwäbisch Hall) and the Monastery of Neumünster in Würzburg. more
