Day Trip from Munich with 2 ½ hours or less travel

Bayern Ticket

The Bayern ticket can be purchased at the Deutsche Bahn Ticket Machines or Service Counter (service charge applied extra). Types of Bayern Ticket  are Single and Partner (up to 5 people).  The saving fare is good on all regional trains and all network train companies included S, U, Trams and almost all buses in Bavaria. The fare is valid on Monday thru Friday between 9 am and 3 am (following day) and all day on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays. All information on city trips are based on Bayern ticket. Andechs Kloester

Anchehs Kloester is home of the Andechs Abbey (monastery) and Brewery. The monks are still brewing their own beers. Brewery Tours are available for public. Andechs has its own beer garden and restaurant. The town can be accessed via Trains, buses and cars. It is about 1 ½ hours away from Munich. Visit the Andechs Web site in german.

Altötting

Altötting  is a small  pilgrimage town is famous for the Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of Grace) and one of the most-visited shrines in Germany. This is a tiny octagonal chapel which keeps a venerated statue of the Virgin Mary. According to the legend, in 1489, a 3-year-old local boy who had drowned in the river was revived when his grieving mother placed him in front of a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary at the high altar. News of the miracle quickly spread, and the chapel was immediately extended by the erection of a nave and a covered walkway. The tradition of Bavaria calls for the heart of the deceased king to be placed in a silver urn and kept at the chapel at Altötting. The heart of "mad" King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the builder of Neuschwanstein castle lies in this chapel, along with that of his grandfathers and father and prince-electors. Pope Benedict XVI was born nearby in the town of Marktl.  Altötting can be reached via trains and buses from Munich but you have to take off the train in Mühldorf(Oberbay) and then take a bus to Altötting but only one train will be offered non stop once in the morning. All trains will take 1 ½ hrs to reach the town.

Augsburg

Regional Trains offers hourly train service between Munich and Regensberg starting at 9am.  The travel time is about 45 minutes. From the railway station to the town center is walking distance but there is transportation available.
Augsburg is home of the Mozart families and Fugger Families. Fuggeri was established by the Jacob Fugger for poor German catholic people who should live at least 2 years in Augsburg and must do three daily prayers. There is a Fuggeri  and bunker museum to show what the apartment looks like in 1500s. The admission is required to entry to the Fuggeri.
Augsburg has Perlachturm – a watch tower built in 989, Augsburg Cathedral, Basilica of St. Ulrich and Afra –Lutheran and Catholic Church, Town Hall and others.

Dachau

Dachau is part of the Greater Munich Metropolitan Area. It is also known for infamous Concentration Camp for political prisoners including Bavarian Royal Family. The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial is available for sightseeing. It can be reached via Munich S-Bahn and buses from the station. The day Munich XL pass is recommended to be purchased prior to departure. You will enter the infamous main gate at Jourhouse and will see several buildings: administrative, prisoner bath and shunt rooms,  tortured bunker, two barracks where the exhibitions of the room during 1933-34, 1937-38, and 1944-45, crematorium, memorial  chapel, watch tower, etc. The admission to the camp is no charge. Administrative building is now museum of the history of the camp. Dachau hosts annual Christmarkt and Dachauer Volksfest which is held in the middle of August. Visit Dachau Tourism Web Site.

Freising

Freising is the home of the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising and World’s oldest brewery, Weihenstephaner Brewery  . Freising is known for two famous hills: Weishenstaphen and Cathedral Hills. The guided Weinhenstephaner Brewery Tours are available  on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Visit Freising Tourism Web Site . St Mary and Corbinian Cathedral is located on the Cathedral Hill. Freising can be reached via Muenchen S-Bahn line S1 and buses are available to reach destination.


Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a mountain resort town and offers winter and summer sports:  Cross country skiing, hiking, camping, alpine skiing, snowboarding. Garmisch-Partenkirchen used to host Winter Olympic 1936. The Alpine Stadium still stands.  Garmisch and Partenkirchen were used to be two independent towns until Adolf Hitler ordered the two towns to become new town in order to qualify for Winter Olympics.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen has two major attractions: Partnach Gorge and Zugspitze Mountain cog train trip.

Partnach Gorge does not have parking lot but you must either park at the Olympiad Stadium parking area or take a bus from railway station.  From the Olympiad stadium, you have to reach the admission building of Partnach Gorge by walking about at least 20 minutes. Admission to the Gorge is required to be paid prior to entrance. You would expect to get wet and will see beauty of wild clear water down the river. It will take about 40 minutes. There are several restaurants up the hill; you will have to go up the stairs to reach. There is a cable car at GraseckBahn available prior to partnach gorge to go up to Graseck to view the gorge.  The cable car fare is required to ride the cable car round trip. Zugspitze is the Germany’s tallest mountain and highest of the Wetterstein Mountains. Zugspitze Mountain has three glaciers: Northern Schneeferner, Hoellentalferner and Southern Schneederner. There are two ways to reach Zugsptizeplatt: one rack Cog Train which starts in Garmisch-Partenkirchen – the Zugspitze Railway Station is next to Deutsche Bahn Railway Station. The Cable Car is available in Eibsee and will be ridden up to the Zugspitze Peak Summit. At the Zugspitzeplatt summit, you can take up to the Zugspitze summit via cable car. There are several restaurants, Beer Gardens and gift shops. There is a weather research station up the mountain. Zugspitze offer free sledge “Zipfelbob rental to ride in the sledding hill. Zugspitze offers special events: Full Moon Ride with Gala Dinner, Bavarian Evening Dinner during the summer. Zugspitze also offers Nostalgia Rides of Bayerische Zugspitzebahn included nostalgia buffet on selected dates during the summer and September. Gruenwald

Gruenwald is home of the medieval castle and Bavaria Films.  Bavaria Film is one of the Europe’s Largest Media Companies. There are S-bahn lines which it stops in Rosenheimerplatz and then take Tram 25 to reach Bavariafilmplatz from Munich (Rosenberg.  There is 20 minutes to reach the main gate of Bavaria Films.  There are hourly guided tour of several studios which requires walking through the exhibits. Hohes Schlossmtown


  Hohes Schlossmtown is the town where the famous castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are located. Hohenschwangau  castle was a childhood residence of King Ludwig II. The town can be reached via Deutsche Bahn which trains run hourly and reach Füssen from Munich about 2 hours and then you can take a bus to Hohes Schlossmtown. For security reasons the palace can only be visited during a 35-minute guided tour. There are also special guided tours that focus on specific topics. In the peak season from June until August, Neuschwanstein has up to 6000 visitors per day, and guests without advance reservation may have to wait several hours. Crowded Trains are reported during the summer. Ticket sales are processed exclusively via the ticket centre in Hohenschwangau. During the summer, you should purchase tickets from the tour bus companies as such as (Mike’s Bike Tours, Radius Tours,  and Gray line Tours, etc.

Ingolstadt

Ingolstadt is part of Greater Munich Metropolitan area. Kreutzor Fortification is the landmark of the city. It is also home of the Audi Manufacturing Facility and Audi Museum. Ingolstadt also has Neus Schloss where  17 richly decorated cannons in the castle courtyard show the extent of the arsenal of weapons at that time. Two of the oldest of these exhibits of the Bavarian Army Museum, the double cannons royal from the years 1524/25 which go by the name of "Scherer" and "Schererin", are a pair. "He" weighs 9,690 pounds and "she" weighs 9,395 pounds.  (Factory Outlet Center) is also in outside of Ingolstadt  and can be reached via train and bus. Kelheim


Kelheim is the large iron oppidum from La Tene period which was used to be the Celtic City of Alcimoennis. It is also home of famous sites, Befrieungshalle – Hall of Liberation, Weltenburg Abbey and G. Schneider & Johns Brewery.

Landshut

Landshut  is of national importance because of its predominantly Gothic architecture within the historic city centre, especially Trausnitz Castle and the Church of Saint Martin featuring the world's tallest brick tower. Among other Gothic architecture are the churches of St. Jodok and Holy Spirit, but also the Town Hall and the Ländtor, the only still existing gate of the medieval fortification.

Landshut is also known for a festival celebrated every four years called the Landshuter Hochzeit, one of the largest historical pageants and commemorating the 1475 marriage of George of Bavaria and Jadwiga Jagiellon.
Landshut  can be reach via Deutsche Bahn and the train is run 2-3 times every hour. It will take only about 50 minutes from Munich.Visit the official tourism web site.

Munich

  1. Munich Residenz  was a seat of Bavarian Royal Government  and residence of Bavarian Royal Family including dukes, electors and kings. The Residenz Museum had rich collections of porcelain, silver, paintings and miniatures.
  2. St Michael Church is a largest renaissance church where King Ludwig II and other royals were buried in Crypt.
  3. Cathedral Church of Our Dear Lady (Frauenkirchen) is the landmark of Munich. The church has crypt of Archbishops and some of Bavarian Royal family members. The tomb of Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV  is very interesting and huge. According to legend, the architect, Joerg von Halsbach made a deal with the devil to help building new church without windows. After the completion, the devil tried to enter the church and realized that the windows were hidden by the columns and left his footprint at the entrance to the church.
  4. St Kajetan (Theatinerkirche) is also called Theatine Church and houses the crypt of the Wittelsbach Royal Families.
  5. St Peter Church is the oldest parish church near Viktualienmarkt.
  6. Deutsches Museum- Masterpiece of Science and Technology is the world’s largest museum and located in Isartor. The museum can be reached via S-Bahn lines and trams. The tour of the museum may require two days to complete. This museum has natural sciences, energy, some transport, new technologies, Museum island, materials and production, communication, musical instruments, kids’ kingdom and special exihibitions.   7. Deutsches Museum – Flugwerft Schiessheim is located in Oberscheissheim. The facility was used to be Bavarian Air Force base and US Army Base during after the World War II.  The facility can be reached via S-Bahn Line 1 and walking distance. It also is near Schiessheim Palace. The museum has propeller-driven planes, jet aircrafts, sailplanes, handgliders, helicopters, jet engines and rockets collections.  Visit their web site.
  8. Deutsches Museum – Verkehrszentrum is located near Thereseinwiese (Oktoberfest). The facility can be accessed via U4/U5 subway. The museum had bicycles, motor vehicles, trains, horse-drawn carriages and other transport collections. Visit the web site/
  9. BMW Park is home of the Bavarian Motors Works manufacturing facility, Welt, Museum. BMWpark can be reached via Munich Train Network: U3/S1 Olympiazentrum and Tram lines 12, 20, 21, 27
  10. Bavarian Motor Works in Munich has factory tours, Welt and Museum near Olympiad Park. BMW Welt (http://www.bmw-welt.com/web_rb/bmw-welt/en/bmw_welt/overview.html) is an experience and delivery center. BMW delivers more than 15,000 new cars to customers who place orders prior to arrival. It also offers technology, design and innovation with lifestyle. Dynamics and culture to create a public place of encounter and dialogue. The factory tours can be purchased at the BMW Welt. Guide Plant Tours are offered in English and German. Individuals and group should be present 30 minutes before the tour begins at the BMW Welt. The Tour will take up to 2 ½ hours.   11. BMW Museum showcases the history of the BMW Company, products, and over 125 BMW cars, motorcycles and engines. The museum has permanent collections: Signs of the Times (1980-1984), Motor of the Times (1984-1991) and Horizons of the Time (1991-2044).   12. OlympiaPark was constructed for the 1972 Summer Olympics. The park still continues to serve venue for cultural, social and religious events. Olympic Stadium, Olympic Hall, Olympic Swim Hall, Olympic Tower and other buildings still exist today.   13. Olympic tower has revolving restaurant which seats 230 people and observation platform. It is really broadcast tower. Admission charge is required to go up to observation tower to view the Alps and Muinch.
 
Nuremberg

Nuremburg offers many museums including railway, art, castle (the three castles that tower over the city including central burgraves' castle, with Free Reich's buildings to the east, the Imperial castle to the west), factory, children, wheat beer glass, archive and more.  Nuremburg is well known for world famous ’s Christmas Market, famous Nuremburger wursts and spiced gingerbread cookies. Regional Trains offers express trains between Munich and Nuremberg starting at about 9am every 2 hours and other non-express trains which will offer 2 to 3 hours travel time.

Beer Cellar Tours is currently available at Haustbrauerei Altstadthof  from 11am to 5pm. The tour will take at least one hour. The tour cannot be accessible for persons with physical disability. At the end of the tour,  we will tour brewery and distiller. Check for more information.

Historischer Kunstbunker Tour is currently available once a day. Tickets can be purchased at Haustbrauerei Altstadthof.  The World War II Art Bunker was climate-controlled bomb shelter used to protect art treasures. Visit the more information.

In Since 1313 the original Nuremberg sausages on Beechwood fire is being grilled in the shadow of the Selbaduskirche. In historical tradition, the sausage House has its own butcher's in the House, where our specialty every day is made fresh.  The name of Restaurant is Bratwurst Glöcklein at the entrance to the old town directly next the Königstorturm in the Handwerkerhof and also Sausage House at St Sebald in Rathusplatz. Passau

You can travel on the regional train to reach Passau. The travel time between Munich and Passau is at least 2 hours.
St Stephen Cathedral  offers Organ performance which Organist will play the world’s largest organ which has 17,774 pipes and 233 registers,  all of which can be played with the five-manual general console in the gallery every day at noon. The admission to the performance will be charged by the church to listen to the music for 30 minutes. St Stephen’s Church usually host daily organ concert during the summer. Veste Oberhaus is the fortress established by the bishop of Passau.  Visit the Web site for more information.

There a small park at the tip of the Passau where you can view three rivers: Inn, Daube and Ilz. There are some riverboats tours available to tour Daube and Inn rivers.

Regensburg

Regensburg is one of  the world’s most beautiful cities. Regensburg is also selected as UNESCO World Heritage city because The Old Town of Regensburg is an outstanding example of a central-European medieval trading town, which llustrates an interchange of cultural and architectural influences, particularly from the 11th to 14th centuries.  St Peter’s Cathedral is indisputably the city’s spiritual center. The collegiate church of “Our Dear Lady of the Old Chapel” dates from Roman times. In the 18th century the Romanesque basilica was magnificently rebuilt in the Bavarian rococo style.

The famous “Sausage Kitchen” is the oldest sausage kitchen in the world. As early as during the construction of the Stone Bridge and the Cathedral in the 12th century, the workers satisfied their hunger in the Sausage Kitchen. The specialty of the historic kitchen is the fine fried sausages served with rolls made with caraway seeds, home-made sauerkraut and mustard. Visitors should pay a visit to eat famous regenburger wursts with homemade sauerkraut!!
Thurn and Taxis Palace is a royal house.  Royal family still has resided in St. Emmeram Castle in Regensburg since 1748. Palace, Princely Treasure Chamber and Carriage House can be available for tours.

Walhalla is the hall of fame memorial where the distungiushed people, famous personalities were honored – Sovereigns, Scientists, Artists, Politicans, etc. The memorial is located east of Regensburg. The Walhalla can be reached by auto, ship along the Danube River from Regensburg and a local bus Bus 5 from the main train station in Regensburg which bus will be run every 20 minutes on weekday and Saturdays and hourly on Sundays and Holidays. Straubing 

Straubing is in the lower Bavaria region. It is well known for the world’s famous annual agricultural festival called Gaeubodenvolksfest which was founded by King Maximilian I in 1812. It has featured with about 120 carousels, roller coasters and six big beer tent. It has been held annually in the middle of August for 11 days.
Straubing also has Romanesque Church of St Peter, gothic city tower and town hall, medieval ducal castle, Herzogsschloss, Church St Vitus (St Vetis), oldest Confratenity in Germany, Carmelite Monastery and Church Holy Spirit and others.
Regional Trains offers hourly train service between Munich and Straubing starting at 9am.  The travel time is about 2 hours to reach Straubing. During the Gaeubodenvolksfest, Deutsche Bahn would expand train schedules.

 
Salzburg Austria
Salzburg Austria is birthplace of the music composer, Wolfang Amadeus Mozart. Salzburg also have three universities. Old town was nominated as a World Heritage Site in 1996. The Baroque Architecture including many churches are world famous.  Salzburg offers Mozart birthplace and residence museum, Hohnensalzburg castle, St Peter Church and Monastery and many others. St Peter‘s Cemetery is one of the oldest and most beautiful cemeteries in the world and also has Catacombs  which was hewn out of the Moenchberg rock. The St Peter’s cemetery is located at Erzabtei St Peter & Friedhof.
