Christmas Markets in Bavaria

Christkindlesmarkt is a Christmas market that is held annually in many towns and cities It
usually takes place during Advent in the central near town hall, and in adjoining squares and
streets. Each year the most Christmas markets begin on the Friday preceding the first Sunday
in Advent and ends on December 23 or 24th. Some christmas markets may have one day or weekends only.

Altoetting The Christmas market in Altötting's baroque main square - in its center the small Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of Grace) - is considered one of the most beautiful by many.

Ansbach A beautiful and very traditional Christmas Market is held in the splendid, historical town centre. This magical market, festively lit and decorated, attracts thousands of visitors each year and features around 40 stalls selling a wide variety of Christmas goodies, including candles, candy, arts and crafts, unique and often hand-made hats, socks, scarves and gloves. Feast yourself on Ansbach's famous sausages, spicy mulled wine and typical Franconian gingerbreads and then settle in to enjoy the sounds of the Ansbach choir.

Augsburg The cozy atmosphere of the Augsburg Christkindlesmarkt with more than 150 booths against the background of Holl's romantic Renaissance city hall and the Perlach tower originated as a gingerbread market in 1498.

The Augsburg Christkindlesmarkt began 500 years ago at city hall square as a gingerbread market and today is among the oldest and most atmospheric Christmas markets in Germany.

During Advent, Maxplatz square in the pedestrian zone is transformed into a Christmas market, featuring among others, a large Franconian half-timber nativity scene, depicting various scenes from the Christmas story. A mediaeval Christmas market takes place in the inner courtyard of Geyerswörth Palace, featuring a wealth of demonstrations and a mediaeval programme of cultural events.

"Goods from Oberammergau, Nuremberg Lebkuchen (gingerbread), cotton childwear, manger figurines, and chimney sweeps made of plums and almonds" were among the wide range of traditional fare on display.

Oberammergau The opening of the annual Christmas market season starts in Oberammergau on or about December 14th. You will find everything you might be looking for during the Christmas season, from homemade jams, hand-knitted socks, to skillfully crafted Christmas jewelery - all in the middle of a traditional Bavarian snow-covered village, surrounded by mountains and fresco painted houses. Of course, you can also discover the world-famous wood carvings: one example is the hand carved Holy Family, so small that it fits in a nutshell.

Passau The Christmas Market is set in the old historic town centre of Passau against the glorious backdrop of St. Stephen's Cathedral, it offers a wide variety of festive themed fun.

About 70 selected little stalls will show and sell special Christmas goods, presents, arts and crafts. A wealth of Christmas specialities and food like Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Glühwein and Bratwurst (fried sausage) is also available.

Regensburg "Regensburger Christkindlmarkt" traditionally happens since more than 400 years on Neupfarrplatz in the heart of Regensburg.

Lots of Christmas booths offer mangers and accessories, ornaments for christmas trees, wooden toys, christmas gifts and many other things. A lot of handicraft is shown: glass makers, carvers, potters, candle makers are showing their arts and some of them produce directly on the market.

The festively decorated Christmas stalls offer besides craft gift items including gold & silver jewelry, nativity figurines, toys, glass and Tiffany art, turning and more. But the culinary delights of a Christmas market spree are not forgotten. Fine fragrance of roasted almonds, hot chestnuts, fruit bread or fried in the air of our market. Every afternoon there is a varied program of music. Even the youngest visitors are not neglected, with donkey rides, live sheep before our "manger" or just a visit to the witch's house and offer variety pastime. On Saturday we visited the Nicholas velvet chaise and Engerl and distributed small gifts. In the parish church already is about 20 sqm large nativity scene set up and can be visited. As a special feature on Bavarian Christmas markets, the participation of members of the crew minehunter "Weilheim" in the sister city, which is donating the proceeds from the sale of financial mulled social and charitable institutions in the city of Weilheim.
